EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

 

PAID CALL FIREFIGHTER

($8.50/hr - $9.50/hr)

 

Big Bear Lake Fire Protection District is looking for dedicated and hardworking individuals who are interested in the fire service and serving the community.  This position offers a unique opportunity to serve the community while receiving valuable training in fire suppression and emergency medical services.  Paid Call Firefighters respond, as supplemental members of the Department, to fire related activities, medical emergencies, rescues, and other calls to protect life and property.  Paid Call Firefighters attend a training drill each Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. and are assigned to rotating 24-hour weekend shifts. 

                              

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age at time of appointment and possess a high school diploma or equivalent; valid California driver’s license and proof of personal automobile insurance; ability to pass written and physical agility tests, physical exam, drug screen and backgrounds checks; ability to obtain CPR certification; and reside in the Big Bear Valley.  EMT certification preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

The ability to communicate effectively and to exercise sound judgment is required.  Capacity to utilize hand tools and light equipment is required.

 

Ability to endure high activity levels, walk on uneven or slippery surfaces; move from place to place at emergency sites, demonstrate dexterity and coordination to handle fire equipment, apparatus and large and small tools; occasional lifting of objects weighting up to 100 lbs., climb up and down ladders; agility to move quickly and easily; wear personal protective clothing weighing 25-30 pounds; wearing of self-contained breathing apparatus weighing 24 pounds; pulling hose lines up steep mountainous terrain at altitudes of 5,000 feet or more.

 

This position requires both indoor and outdoor work including contact with public under stressful and/or dangerous conditionsOutdoor conditions vary from hot to extremely cold temperaturesWork is typically performed as a member of a team.
