Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) Wood Shake/Shingle Roof Replacement Grant Program for the San Bernardino County Mountains

The Department will no longer be funding wood shake/shingle roof replacements through grants. The Department’s last Wood Shake/Shingle Roof Replacement Grant closed on June 18, 2019. Due to the success of grants, there are a minimal number of wood shake/shingle roofs to be replaced in the Big Bear Valley and other areas on the mountain top.

Between 2008 and 2019 the department was awarded $5,457,712 through six different grants from Cal OES, FEMA and Cal Fire, to replace wood shake/shingle roofs. When the program started there were approximately 3,000 wood shake/shingle roofs in need of replacement. These grants were far-reaching, and we were able to help homeowners from Forest Falls to Wrightwood. Through these programs, grant funds were used to replace 639 roofs. In Big Bear City 112 roofs were replaced with 17 remaining. In Big Bear Lake 245 roofs were replaced with 6 remaining and in other mountain top areas 282 were re-roofed with approximately 630 remaining. Many homeowners re-roofed on their own due to insurance requirements.
