CPR CLASSES

CPR/AED Training

Did you know that approximately 250,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest?  That breaks down to approximately 700 people per day.  Cardiac arrest usually results from an abnormal heart rhythm caused by underlying heart disease.  Unfortunately, quick emergency medical response isn’t always possible.  Even the very best emergency medical response systems experience delays due to traffic, access to secured buildings, weather, rural community living, etc.  Training members of the public to perform CPR and use of automated external defibrillators has significantly improved patient outcome.

The Big Bear Lake Fire Department is a Community Training Center through the American Heart Association.  The Fire Department currently has thirteen certified instructors.  Training will include: recognizing warning signs of a heart attack and stroke; how to perform one-rescuer adult CPR; and proper use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).  People with minimal training can use an AED to restore a proper heart rhythm to someone whose heart has stopped beating.  AEDs are located throughout the Valley – we’ll tell you where.  Students practice skills on department provided sterilized manikins (adult and infant).

CPR/AED classes are held the second Saturday of each month. The Fire Department’s professionally trained EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) and Paramedics instruct the classes that are taught at the Big Bear Lake Fire Department.  The station address is 41090 Big Bear Boulevard, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315.

The fee for the class is $30 per person which covers instruction, an American Heart Association reference book and a CD-ROM for your computer. You will also receive a keychain that contains a plastic mask to perform CPR and a Heartsaver AED card that certifies that you have successfully completed the curriculum of the American Heart Association Heartsaver AED Program.  This curriculum includes adult CPR & AED, child CPR & AED, and/or infant CPR.

Please notify the Department prior to the commencement of the class if you are seeking a   Healthcare Provider card. This card certifies that an individual has successfully completed the curriculum of the American Heart Association for basic life support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program.

Individuals desiring to sign up for CPR/AED or Heartsaver Provider classes may telephone Corinne Flores or Sue McIlwain at 909/866-7566.  Class size is limited to ten students per session.  Please reserve your seat with a $30 per person fee which is paid prior to the class.  Individual classes are also available for small groups.
