Portable Heater Safety

Portable heaters can be an efficient way to warm a room or supplement your home’s heating system; however, if not used properly, they can be a fire or electrical shock hazard.  According to a National Fire Protection Association study, there are approximately 3000 portable heater fires in the United States annually.  Of those fires, most were found to be caused by improper use.

The Big Bear Lake Fire Protection District, urges Big Bear Valley residents and visitors to follow the following simple and important safety tips when using portable heaters:

  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels before using a portable heater.

  • DO NOT leave an operating heater unattended.
  • Unplug portable heaters when not in use by pulling the plug straight
