FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Prescribed burning continuing in Big Bear area of San Bernardino National Forest

USFS fire crews will continue to take advantage of favorable spring weather conditions for more prescribed burning in the Bluff Mesa area southwest of Big Bear Lake, potentially beginning on Thursday, May 21 and continuing through Friday, May 22. The work helps create safe spaces for firefighters to be placed between communities and natural areas should a wildfire occur. This week will be a continuation of a broadcast burn for up to 150 acres located east of Forest Service Road 2N10 and 2N96, on the north side of Bluff Lake and marsh.

Burning will occur only when weather and air quality conditions permit. There will be no closures of nearby trails, roads or yellow post campsites.

Since last Thursday, fire crews have accomplished over 200 acres of fuels reduction in the Bluff Mesa area, making great progress in forest health and community protection. Approximately 1,450 acres have been treated by prescribed fire across the Forest over the past year.

For daily updates on prescribed burning operations, check the Forest's Alerts and Notices web page or Forest's Twitter account.

A message from us on the Coronavirus (Covid-19).

We are following CDC guidelines and working with Bear Valley Community Hospital in preparation for any cases on the mountain that may present itself.

Changes in 9-1-1 care that you can expect during these unique times:

-Dispatch will ask specific questions to help identify if the patient is showing signs and symptoms of the virus
-Only one crew member may approach the door and escort the patient outside to the ambulance
-Obviously if more than one crew member is needed for assistance, this will happen
-A mask will be placed on the patient
-Transport to BVCH will be done and the patient will be quarantined and tested

With the schools and ski resorts closed, hopefully Big Bear can avoid any cases, or at least limit the number of cases. Please wash your hands and drink plenty of water.

Thank you!

Public Awareness/Education

In light of some recent head injuries, both minor and severe, we want to address helmet usage and myths surrounding them.

If you speak with anyone who works in this field, we will tell you a helmet is necessary, and there isn't one of us that wouldn't make our own family member or friend wear one. Helmets save lives every day. The helmets lessen the impact, while also shortening the distance your neck stretches during an impact. We see the benefits of the helmet all the time. At the bottom of this post, there are examples of helmets that potentially saved the lives of the patients wearing them.

"The Myths"

Myth-Appearance

The helmets are stylish and compact. In this day and age, you look weird without one.

Myth-Beginners aren't good enough to need one

Some of the worst injuries we have encountered, including deaths, are when two people collide. Beginners are usually zigzagging slowly across the run, which makes them susceptible to a collision. Also, beginners have the tendencies to get out of control and fall.

Myth-Advanced riders keep control and know how to fall, therefore, avoid significant injury

Unfortunately the better riders get, the bigger and faster they go. With this, they may not fall a lot, but when they do finally make that error, it could be a bad impact. However, the good thing is, most good and experienced riders wear a helmet because they know the repercussions.

Myth-Wearing a helmet might give a false sense of security

This just simply isn't true. It doesn’t increase the desire of the rider to take risks.

There are no laws that we are aware of, in regards to wearing a helmet while doing snow sports, but we really want to emphasize the necessity of wearing one. Don't let your friends or family ski or snowboard without one.

Below are examples of helmets from one medic, within the last 30 days that potentially saved the lives of or lessened the impact of the user. Some of these patients had head injuries, but without the helmet, may have had a different outcome.

Hypothermia Warning Signs

Published by  Dawn Marschinke  · January 23, 2018

Traffic came to a stand-still for hours on the MLK holiday as rescue efforts for two hikers ensued on Hwy 38 near Jenks Lake Rd. Sheriff’s Aviation responded to search for a male that fell while hiking. The Sheriff's helicopter found the hiker and requested the Sheriff's rescue helicopter extract the victim. Sheriff's Air Medics treated the hiker on-scene and was then flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Big Bear Fire Department Ambulance MA282A was on-scene and transp orted the second hiker to Redlands Community Hospital for treatment.

Sheriff’s Dept. search and rescue teams from Big Bear Valley and San G were on the trail and equipped to extract the hikers down in case a helicopter "pick off" was not possible. They learned the next morning that the hikers had a dog that ran off when the helicopters arrived, and Stella, a white Siberian Husky was still lost in the wilderness. Several off-duty members of Big Bear and San G Search and Rescue teams independently went to look for her. They all found themselves together at the trailhead ready to search for Stella. After an extensive search, they heard the cries from Stella and climbed an ice shelf to reach a very grateful puppy. With no way down, two of the group of rescuers carried Stella down a back trail.

A big thank-you to all the team members involved in the rescue of the hikers; and a special shout-out goes to the off-duty search and rescue teams that reunited Stella with her loved ones.

In addition to 20 years as a full-time firefighter, Chief Parham served an additional 7 years as a paid call firefighter for the Big Bear Lake Fire Department early in his career. Chief Parham has contributed much to the service of this Valley throughout his career and we are very proud to call him one of our own.

A big congratulations to Jordon Willis for graduating his Paramedic program through the Victor Valley Paramedic Academy.

Jordon was awarded the Field Internship Excellence Award and The Mathew Bashaw Award which reflects the morals, integrity, and patient advocacy of Mathew Bashaw, whom was a graduate of Victor Valley College, and tragically passed away shortly after graduating his Paramedic Program a few years before Jordon’s academy.

Jordon has been with the Big Bear Fire  Department since 2014. He started as Paid Call, then a Limited Term Firefighter, and is now a Professional Full Time Firefighter/EMT. Jordon will now hold the title of Firefighter/Paramedic. Jordon is very honored and excited to continue protecting and serving the residents of Big Bear.

Great job Jordon!

Aerial Line Along I-15 Corridor Impacting Big Bear Valley

BIG BEAR LAKE, CA/July 18, 2018, 6:12 p.m.– An aerial communication line along the I-15 corridor has been knocked out of service affecting landline communications to the 9-1-1 system in the Big Bear Valley. It is not known yet how much of the Valley is being impacted but it is confirmed that certain areas are impacted. If a caller on a landline experiences problems getting through to 9-1 -1, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is directing people to call (909) 387-8313. At that point the caller will be directed to either fire or law enforcement depending on need.

This situation is not impacting cellular phones.

Crews will be on-scene to repair the line shortly, but at this time, it is unknown how long the landline service to 9-1-1 will be down.

Southern California has seen its share of devastating wildfires recently, due to extremely dry, late-season Santa Ana winds. The Thomas Fire in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, is now California's 5th largest wildfire in history according to CAL FIRE. Big Bear Firefighters continue to help fight this massive blaze. We ask everyone to keep our firefighters in their thoughts for a successful completion of their mission and their safe return home.  # bigbearfire   # thomasfire  http://bigbearfire.com/
