This employment opportunity provides an excellent way to build experience for those individuals seeking a career in emergency medical services.

Career Advancement Opportunities: This position will have the opportunity to test for all promotional opportunities within the Big Bear Fire Department. Possible promotional opportunities consist of reclassification from Ambulance Operator-Paramedic to Firefighter- Paramedic and Flight Paramedic. All job qualifications and requirements must be met prior to testing for promotion.

Benefits: All employees of the Big Bear Fire Department are enrolled in San Bernardino County Employee’s Retirement Association (SBCERA) retirement system, accompanied by fully covered family health, vision, and dental benefits. While working a 48/96 shift schedule, the Ambulance Operator-Paramedic average annual salary is up to $77,764 with 16 hours of built-in overtime per pay period. Salary may be negotiable on the step scale based on previous experience.  

  • SBCERA retirement plan has reciprocity with CalPERs and '37 Act Plans
  • Employee may choose cash in lieu of health insurance benefits
  • The Authority contributes up to $5,000 per year into employee’s Health Retirement Account with full vesting at five years employment
  • The Authority provides short- and long-term disability, as well as a $100,000 life insurance policy.
  • The Ambulance Operator-Paramedic earns 12 hours of paid time off per pay period
